Polkadot (DOT) is a network designed to connect many blockchains into one interoperable system. Created by Ethereum co-founder Gavin Wood and launched in 2020, its core idea is a central "relay chain" that provides shared security to a set of connected chains called parachains, letting specialised blockchains communicate and pool their security rather than standing alone. DOT is used for staking, governance and to bond parachains to the network.
