About Tether

Tether (USDT) is the largest stablecoin in crypto — a token designed to track the value of one US dollar. Issued by Tether Limited since 2014, it exists to give traders a dollar-denominated asset they can move between exchanges and in and out of positions without touching the traditional banking system each time. It is the most widely used settlement asset on the market, and a huge share of crypto trading is quoted against it.

Tether says each token is backed by reserves — largely US Treasury bills and cash equivalents — and publishes regular attestations, though it has faced long-running scrutiny over the exact composition and past disclosures. A stablecoin is only ever as sound as its backing and its issuer: the everyday risk is not wild price swings but the possibility of a loss of confidence or a break from the dollar peg. It is a tool for moving value, not an investment.

First Light on Tether (USDT)
What’s happening

Tether is a centralised, dollar-pegged stablecoin issued by Tether Limited and backed, it says, mainly by US Treasuries and cash. It is the market’s dominant settlement and trading asset, with the deepest liquidity of any stablecoin.

Why it matters

USDT’s usefulness is its stability, so the thing to watch is anything that threatens it: reserve quality, issuer transparency and regulation. A peg is a promise, not a law of nature — stablecoins have wobbled before. Because so much of the market settles in USDT, a serious loss of confidence would ripple widely. It is designed to hold a dollar, not to grow.

First Light shows what’s happening and why it matters — a clarity tool, not a prediction. Not financial advice.

Tether is a stablecoin that aims to stay worth one US dollar, used across crypto to trade and to move value between exchanges.

Is Tether backed by real dollars?
