About Cosmos

Cosmos (ATOM) is less a single blockchain than a vision of many connected ones — an "internet of blockchains". Its technology lets developers build application-specific chains that can communicate and transfer assets with one another through a shared standard called IBC (Inter-Blockchain Communication). ATOM is the token of the Cosmos Hub, one of the central chains in this ecosystem, and is used for staking and governance.

The Cosmos approach has been influential — many well-known networks are built with its tools — but that success creates a puzzle: if every chain can stand alone, what accrues to ATOM itself? The project has been working on giving the Hub and its token a clearer role, such as providing shared security to other chains. ATOM is a volatile, high-risk asset, and its value case is more nuanced than a single-chain token.

First Light on Cosmos (ATOM)
What’s happening

Cosmos is an ecosystem of interoperable, application-specific blockchains connected by the IBC standard. ATOM is the Cosmos Hub’s token, used for staking and governance.

Why it matters

Cosmos’s tech is widely used, but its openness raises the question of what value flows to ATOM specifically — an ongoing focus of its roadmap. Influential and interoperable; token value-capture is the debate. ATOM is volatile and high-risk.
