About Ethereum Classic

Ethereum Classic (ETC) is the original Ethereum blockchain, preserved after a contentious split in 2016. When a major hack drained funds from an early project called The DAO, most of the community chose to reverse it with a change to the chain — that became today’s Ethereum. A minority argued the ledger should never be altered on principle ("code is law") and kept the unchanged chain running as Ethereum Classic.

ETC remains a proof-of-work blockchain (it did not follow Ethereum to proof-of-stake) and supports smart contracts, but it has far less development activity, value and security than Ethereum. Its identity is tied to immutability and its history rather than a thriving ecosystem. ETC is a volatile, high-risk asset.

First Light on Ethereum Classic (ETC)
What’s happening

Ethereum Classic is the original, unaltered Ethereum chain, kept alive after the 2016 DAO split on a "code is law" principle. It remains proof-of-work and supports smart contracts, but is much smaller than Ethereum.

Why it matters

ETC’s identity is immutability and history. The reality is far less development, value and security than Ethereum, and being proof-of-work brings its own considerations. Principled but marginal. ETC is volatile and high-risk.

Ethereum Classic FAQ

What is Ethereum Classic?

Ethereum Classic (ETC) is the original Ethereum blockchain, preserved after a 2016 split over whether to reverse a major hack.

How is it different from Ethereum?

Ethereum reversed the hack and later moved to proof-of-stake; Ethereum Classic kept the unaltered chain and remains proof-of-work, with far less activity and value.

What does "code is law" mean here?

It is the principle that a blockchain’s recorded history should never be changed, even to undo a hack — the reasoning behind keeping Ethereum Classic.

Where does the ETC price come from?

The live ETC price, 24-hour change and volume come from Binance public market data.
