Shiba Inu (SHIB) is a meme coin launched in 2020, inspired by the same Shiba Inu dog as Dogecoin and marketed early on as a "Dogecoin killer". It began as an Ethereum-based token with an enormous supply — quadrillions of tokens — which is why its price per token is a tiny fraction of a penny. Its rise was driven overwhelmingly by community enthusiasm and social-media momentum rather than any underlying use.
The project has since tried to add substance, including its own layer-2 network and related tokens, in an effort to become more than a meme.
